Volunteering, the desire to give your talents with compassion to a person on their end-of-life journey. From the beginning, hospice was managed by volunteers and there is still a continued need for volunteer service in hospice care. Medicare requires hospice to train volunteers as a part of the services they provide.
As a hospice volunteer, you can gain fulfillment from knowing that you have made a difference in another person’s life and be a support for our community. Hospice volunteers are provided with training and the tools they need to help them with whatever volunteer task they are comfortable with providing. Our volunteers are there to offer support to office staff as well as support for our patients and their families. Volunteers can provide companionship and caregiver relief for our patients/family. This allows the caregiver time to take a break from caregiving and have time for themselves. Some volunteers who would rather not deal directly with hospice patients can also help us with other volunteer opportunities.
Some of the volunteer opportunities available include but not limited to:
- Nursing home activities
- Direct care volunteers
- Entertainment and activity planning
- Office/administrative assistance
- Special projects (Ex. Annual Memorial Service)
- Small home repairs
- Grass cutting for patients
- Student interns
